The area Al Garhoud lies to the north of the Al Garhoud Bridge, between the Creek and Deira, and is bordered by the airport. It is primarily a commercial district that quietens down at night, although there are residential pockets.
There are places by the Creek that offer escape from the ever-increasing congestion. Almost under the bridge is a popular spot for fishing and nearby, along the Creek, is the site for Dubai Festival City, one of the city's latest shopping and entertainment complexes currently under construction. It is being developed at an estimated cost of six billion dirhams over the next three years. The first phase, which is due to open in 2oo5, will include a marina, a 3.2 km waterfront promenade, 4o water view restaurants and an amphitheatre. Subsequent phases will include hotels, restaurants, family entertainment venues, a `global village', residential and office space, plus indoor and outdoor shopping.
Opposite City Centre and bordering the Creek for about n/2 km is an enticing stretch of carefully landscaped greenery, home to the Dubai Creek Golf & Yacht Club which re-opens in early 2005 after extensive landscaping and refurbishment. The impressive golf clubhouse is based on the shape of dhow sails (in fact the image of this famous building is found on the Dhs.2o note), while the yacht club is aptly in the shape of a yacht! This peaceful retreat from the bustle of the city offers night golf, a gym and swimming pool, plus several excellent restaurants that are open to non-members.
Located to the north east, Dubai International Airport has been voted Airport of the Year several times, and is currently undergoing a massive $4.1 billion expansion. Work is in progress for Terminal 3 and two additional concourses, which are due for completion in 2oo6. |
