The Spice Souk has narrow streets and an aroma so unique; it's like walking into another era. The place seems to have downsized in the past few years, and the rows of stalls displaying spice laden sacks are fast diminishing. Although spices are still available in a few shops, the souk is now home to an increasing number of cheap electronic goods and wholesale shoes. Perhaps the slow demise is due to more and more supermarkets supplying a wider range of spices. Carrefour in Deira City Centre has a whole section dedicated to exotic spices, and although the choice is good, it lacks the atmosphere of the souk. The souk vendors are only too happy to chat endlessly, advising you on the various spices and herbs. Although most of the stalls stock the same basic items, you'll be able to pick up expensive spices, such as saffron, at bargain prices. |
